Boat Share

Shared Boat Ownership
What is Boat Shared Ownership?
This is a way to own a part (normally 8% or 4 weeks use per year) of a boat to enable you to enjoy spending time on your own boat but sharing the initial purchase price and annual running costs. The boat is managed for you so that you spend your time cruising rather than on administration and maintenance. How does this compare to other boating options?
Borrowing
If you are lucky enough to have a friend or family member who are prepared to lend you a boat, we have to admit, it is the cheapest and most cost effective form of boating.
Hiring
This is the way most people are introduced to the beauty and enjoyment of canal boat holidays. If you only want the occasional weekend or weeks boating holidays this is probably for you. If you want three or four weeks a year on a boat you know the quality of, full or shared ownership is for you.

Buying a boat
If you have more that 4 weeks a year available to use a boat, want to live on it, or like tinkering every weekend, then buying a boat of your own, (If you can afford it), may be for you. However, think carefully because it is a big investment in both time and money.

Your Share
There are generally 12 owners in a boat syndicate, each of whom purchase an 8% share. An 8% shareholding entitles the owner to use their boat for 4 weeks a year for the life of the boat. An AGM is held for each boat share syndicate at a central location. At the AGM each member draws their four weeks - This is a week in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Syndicate boat members can swap weeks with other owners. Unused weeks are made available for fellow syndicate owners to use. Running costs are divided between owners each paying in proportion to their share ownership (normally 8%). Owners are charged a management fee for the administration of their syndicate At the AGM the owners will vote on where the boat is to be based in the following year. A fortnight is set aside each year where the annual maintenance work is carried out by the boatyard where it is based. If you are an inexperienced boater we can arrange a RYA helmsman course. We can offer a resale service if you decide to sell your share. You enjoy using it and we deal with the boat administration and maintenance.
